English Bible Study
Late
that same (Sunday) night, Kristin called again and said that
she had gone to an English Bible study at the home of an old American couple,
had breathed the toxic air outside for three hours while traveling to and from their
place, was now very very sick, and asked to be evacuated the next day, which is
a Monday.
I knew that American couple. They were fully-supported missionaries whose only missionary work was to hold a one-hour English Bible study once a week for a handful of expatriates. There was very little Bible in their "Bible study," which was more a social gathering for young expatriates. When Kristin and I attended their English Bible study while visiting their city a couple of years earlier and the study reached the one hour mark, the couple, who didn't seem to be really into the study, cut off the discussion and told everyone to leave. So I had gotten the impression that they were hosting it just to continue to claim to be doing missionary work in China so that they can keep getting supported by their donors in USA.
I asked Kristin why, just after she had asked me what to do and I had told her to stay inside or at a hospital, she had spent three hours breathing the toxic air outside to go to their place all of a sudden? She (probably another alter of her) raised her voice and yelled that it was because she had wanted to go to a Bible study. So I yelled back that she knew theirs was not a real Bible study, and now she is even sicker and won't even get paid for the work that she did while breathing China toxic air pollution for months. She began to cry.
I changed her flight and flew her out the next day. She landed so sick that she immediately had to be hospitalized. I paid her hospital bill and also bought her a new laptop as she had left her laptop, which I had bought her, in the bathroom of the connecting airport on her way out of China. I then asked her to reimburse me for the flight that I had paid to evacuate her for the second time in two months. She did but seemed unhappy about it.
