Christian Student
Before
leaving China two years earlier, I had left a few pieces of luggage with the family
of one of the Christian students who had translated for me during
English-to-ChineseBible studies at a Three Self Church near a university in
a different part of China and
whose subsequent questions about the Bible I had been answering via emails. Soon after
returning to China, I asked her to send my luggage and to tell me the freight
cost so that I can reimburse her.
Instead of sending my luggage, the Christian student and her mother took the train and brought it half way across China and surprised me at my new campus. I was glad to see them again and thanked them for their kindness, and introduced them to Kristin, who cooked up a storm in the tiny kitchen to welcome them.
We had a nice dinner before they left, and they were too polite to say anything, but I knew that they were shocked to find me, an unmarried man whom the Christian student had respected as her Bible teacher, living with a young woman. We weren't having sex but an unmarried man shouldn't be living with an unmarried woman.
Even if the Christian student had confronted me about it, to inform her that it's because while Kristin needs to be housed and cared for, everyone we had asked had refused to do so because she has demons from being raped by her Satanist father would have exposed Kristin's painful past and risked her being rejected by them. So the Christian student left without being informed and thinking that her Bible teacher is a hypocrite, and the word spread among the students from that university who also had been in the Bible study.
A Chinese sister from a Bible study that I had taught in another province also visited and left similarly shocked, uninformed, and disappointed.
