Christian Brother

Christian BrotherAfter trying for a few days but failing to convince her or to have the sweet alter come up, I called the Christian counselor and asked, then pleaded with him to call and have a word with Kristin to get her to stay or to have the sweet alter return. He declined to make the call, saying that his job is to counsel those who come to his office, not those who don't want to come. I told him that whether to go to him or not was up to her but could he please, as a Christian brother more than a counselor, just make one call to a Christian sister as she is at a fork in the road and his call could be pivotal to her future? He said no and hung up.

I had put down the security deposit for her studio rental, which was across the street from my place, so I went there to retrieve it as Kristin checked out. She said with a smile that her taxi driver boyfriend had just arrived and asked me not to scare him. The guy was said to be thirty years old but looked twenty and was a small, scrawny kid who already looked scared when he nervously smiled at me.

He put her suitcase in the trunk, opened the front passenger door for Kristin, who looked back at me as if to gauge my reaction, and then got in. He closed her door, walked around to the driver's side, got in, and his taxi then drove off.

Seeing Kristin fly off to another man was hard on me. Seeing her drive off with another man was harder. Even though I could no longer marry her, I still dearly loved and missed the sweet Kristin whom I used to know. As I took a deep breath and walked back toward my place, I felt that my heart had broken again.

Four days thereafter, Kristin called and said that she has been stuck at the destination airport for three days because her employer is running late in depositing her paycheck into her account. I told her that is why I had told her not to travel without any financial cushion. Every time she doesn't listen to my counsel, she creates and gets mired in chaos. I told her to call her employer or her taxi driver boyfriend, and hung up.

Three days later, she called again. She was still stuck at the destination airport. Her employer was still having trouble depositing her paycheck and she was no longer with her taxi driver boyfriend as she had broken up with him when he dropped her off at the airport. Moreover, she was beginning to feel her body shut down because she had landed with literally no money and hadn't had any food for the past six days and hadn't been able to sleep much on the airport lounge chairs.

I same-day wired her $300, and she called me the next day. She sounded better after having used the money to eat and sleep in a hotel. So why was she calling me again? She said it's because she needs to receive emotional comfort.

After what she had done to me, she now wants to receive emotional comfort from me? I hung up on her. In hindsight, I guess I could have been more patient, but I needed emotional comfort myself and was in no shape to provide it to her.
